There are several misconceptions about ponds. Fortunately these Pond Myths are rapidly becoming exposed and the results have been wonderful. According to a 2005 USA Today poll, ponds are now the number one landscape component that homeowners want in their backyard! Unlike pools then, ponds add value to your property. After all, what can be more natural in your landscape than water? In fact, having a pond is one of the requirements for the National Wildlife Federation to certify your backyard as a Certified Wildlife Habitat.
Having a pond and caring for it requires less maintenance than a lawn. With its own ecological system including water plants, beneficial bacteria, fish, a bio-falls unit, a skimmer and a net that automatically catches debris, the water stays crystal clear. In this naturalistic setting, the fish eat the plants, then produce waste that gets broken down (along with other pond debris) by aerobic bacteria that's colonized on the rocks and gravel below; it is then taken back up as nutrition by the plants, continuing the cycle. Put up your feet and relax with a book or enjoy the wildlife as you realize that your pond has made your backyard a living, breathing environment!
